1 The spirit of Burgundy is the vignerons' opiate

Vins Divins is first and foremost all about the growers! And if they happen to make great wine too, then that’s even better! Joke aside, rest assured, they all do! Vins Divins was created in 1990 by Michael Stephens in Beaune to pinpoint true terroir and promote the humbleness of the growers of Burgundy to the world wine market.

In Terroir we trust humble vignerons,a must

Vines have been cultivated in our wonderful Bourgogne for over 2000 years but the limestone the vines grow in was laid down over 150 million years ago. Gevrey-Chambertin doesn't taste like Volnay but the grape remains the same, Pinot noir. Chablis has nothing in common with Chassagne-Montrachet - except the Chardonnay grape variety. Terroir is the key here and the Burgundians have had ample time to examine and bring the best out of these divine soils.

Millenniums of tradition An ultimate passion

2000 years is a reasonable period over which Burgundians could develop the specific care and attention required to produce the purest, high fidelity expression of the grapes in question. Once the natural selection of the Pinot noir amongst others had been made after the 10th century, the cistercian order of monks at the Abbaye de Citeaux were instrumental in crafting the style and quality of Burgundy that would dominate and define the fine wine market for over 500 years.

It is easy to understate the effort, sweat and tears that go into producing a bottle of fine Burgundy. We see the vignerons on a daily basis and sympathise with the trials and tribulations of the growing season.

BURGUNDY CALLING, ADIEU MANCHESTER!

Mike Stephens was born in Manchester, England in the late 1950's. After language studies and the discovery of wine at Bradford University, it became evident that he should relocate at the source of the wine that excited him so much - BURGUNDY! In 1980, he journeyed to Beaune and knocked on the doors of famous shippers. Fortunately, Louis Latour was open minded and interviewed him.
A decent level of French and some honest cheek won the day. Mike worked there for 10 years and was able to learn the Burgundy business from the inside. In 1990, he decided to start up an independent Burgundy export merchant and hey Presto! The birth of Vins Divins!

Burgundy is always referred to as a « patchwork » or a « mosaic » given its multiple communes, "climats" and appellations. However,if limestone and clay are the common denominator, the various layers of this soil and the presence of Pinot Noir or Chardonnay intensify the mosaic even further by making for myriad nuances of bouquet texture and savour.

All our vignerons are in the vines making sure the work is done to their standards which for us is a guarantee of the quality of their wines. We work with a variety of domaines whether they are sustainable, organic or biodynamic. The main element that matters in the end is the intrinsic quality.

In Burgundy, it is not uncommon to have major differences of over one month in harvest dates. This generates various styles of wine depending on the individual vintage. If you like young wines, then you will enjoy drinking 2015 and 2016s which have nice tension and juiciness. However, if you prefer wines with a more classical structure (i.e: age), then you will want to lay down your 2010 and 2012s.

The spirit of Burgundy In the Vigneron's
opiate

Vins Divins is first and foremost all about the growers! And if they happen to make great wine too, then that’s even better! Joke aside, rest assured, they all do! Vins Divins was created in 1990 by Michael Stephens in Beaune to pinpoint true terroir and promote the humbleness of the growers of Burgundy to the world wine market; whether you are a novice or a connoisseur. His daughter Cara has recently joined him after several years of working abroad.

The fount of our vision about Burgundy wine is shared with our growers and their respect for their land. We apply the same criteria to the Blue chip estates as we do to the the lesser-known domaines.

In the late 2000s, with speculators in wine auctions creating an even bigger gap in prices in Burgundy and foreign investors buying out renowned Burgundian estates, there is no better time to discover new and lesser known estates. Customers are eager to learn more about Burgundy wine and to discover new estates and it is with great pleasure that we, at Vins Divins, keep on striving to seek those hidden gems that have yet to be showcased to the world.

business culture

Mike being born in England and Cara in Burgundy of British parents, the approach to business is 100% Anglo-Saxon but with a Burgundian twist, meaning straight-forward, transparency being a must both with growers and clients abroad and with no messing about. Cara lived for 2 years in the United States and acquired a deep understanding of the various markets from the east to the west coast having spent some time with one of our importers in Oregon and New York. She has also worked at an estate in Washington state, where she learned how a new world winery functions. Last but not least, she returned to Burgundy having worked for almost two years in London for one of our importers, Jeroboams wine merchant. She was in charge of developing the events market and was also a sales advisor at the Knightsbridge store. With such a wide set of activities, such as importing, restaurant trading, private sales, retail and events, this experience has given her a full insight into the London market.

At Vins Divins, we offer superlative service whether you are a customer or a supplier. Quality is our vocation along with a little self-deprecation. A company is lost without customers, naturally though the produce we offer has to conform to the specifications of the customer. It's crucial to determine rapidly the style and quality that each client seeks. I feel we're lucky insofaras we share the similar tastebuds with the vast majority of our clientèle; this facilitates the task of coming up with the right burgundies for them every time. As for growers, we take them to their key markets to raise awareness on the realities of the current market and to show them that each market has its specificities and needs personalised treatment.

01 - Philosophy

Purveying honest loyal and trustworthy wines

It is easy to understate the effort, sweat and tears that go into producing a bottle of fine Burgundy. We see the vignerons on a daily basis and sympathise with the trials and tribulations of the growing season. After all, it is vital to bring sound, healthy grapes to the winery if one is to have a crack at making a decent wine. Here, we remind you of the Burgundian climate which - despite the supposed climate change of the 2000s - can still unleash waves of downy Mildew and Powdery mildew spores in inclement vintages. The vigneron has to be totally reactive to avoid losing his crop. Other obstacles can further complicate the development of the fruit - rot for example.

At Vins Divins, once we have tracked down these type of Burgundies,we feel it is our duty to ensure that their onward transport is handled with the same respect and professionalism as the vigneron in the vines. It is vital that the people we work with fully subscribe to this notion and care about how their wines are brought to market. We ensure temperature controlled transport and storage at our warehouse. We strongly recommend our partners act likewise for shipments.
